Protecting Children's Privacy Online

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) was passed by Congress in October 1998, with a requirement that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issue and enforce rules concerning children's online privacy. The primary goal of the Act and the Rule is to place parents in control over what information is collected from their children online. The Rule was designed to be strong, yet flexible, to protect children while recognizing the dynamic nature of the Internet. Click here to read the Frequently Asked Questions about the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule.

Applications filled out by those under the age of 13 will not be accepted or retained by the credit union.

Great Lakes Federal Credit Union does not collect information from any person accessing our website, regardless of age, nor does it have any interest in any information collected on any linked site.

CREDIT UNION INFORMATION FOR KIDS

What is a credit union?

A credit union is a group of people with a common bond, who pool their money together to form a financial institution (credit union).  A common bond could be employees of the same company, people who live in the same city or community, people who belong to the same group or organization, or a combination of these.  The people who belong to a credit union are called members.  Each member owns a share of the credit union.

Credit unions are non-profit organizations.  This means there are more benefits to the members.  The benefits include lower interest rates on loans, higher dividend rates on shares (savings) accounts, and lower fees and charges.

All credit unions are chartered.  A charter is an approval to conduct business as a financial institution (credit union).  Charters are issued by either the state the credit union is conducting business or the federal government.  Great Lakes First Federal Credit Union is chartered by the federal government.
